Giving Thanks This Thanksgiving

November 21, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

We are growing ever-nearer to Thanksgiving, and already we detect the scent of feasts being prepared. Thank You Neon Sign This season isn’t just about the dishes placed before us at the table though, it’s a time to reflect on our lives and what we are truly thankful for. This characteristic of the holiday is, in our opinion, just as important for businesses to ponder as it is for individuals. That being said, we want to take some time before the hustle and bustles of Thanksgiving day to write down what it is that we are all thankful for here at Skate World Pasadena!

  • First and foremost, without our patrons coming to skate week in and week out, we would not exist. We thank each and every one of you, from those who have visited us once to our regulars.
  • The energy you all bring! A rink is really just a wood floor without its skaters. The energy you bring to this place breathes life into what would otherwise just be another building.
  • Roller skating, of course! It’s hard to consider now, but there was once a point in time when roller skating did not exist! We are so thankful to live in a time when it does and to exist during a point in its history when roller skating is so advanced. There aren’t many things in this world we can say we love more than roller skating and most everything else is a distant second.

We hope your holiday is filled with laughter and love this year! We welcome you to come visit us after Thanksgiving is over this year to skate off the inevitable extra calorie or two. Happy Thanksgiving!

Skate Smooth with Regular Roller Skate Maintenance!

October 21, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

When the rink is smooth and the skates are rolling smoother, there isn’t anytroller skating hing much better in this world! Here, at Skate World Pasadena in Pasadena, TX , we couldn’t agree more with this statement, and we find ourselves in a constant quest for that perfect roll. But without a little effort from the skate now and then, that sought-after skate will never come. Our job is to keep the rink as smooth as possible, but without a little effort from the skater, those skates won’t function optimally. If you are in an endless quest for that great skate, here are some things to pay attention to with your roller skates.

First Things First

Upon buying a new pair of skates, there are a few things to address before lacing up.

  • Check the wheels. Make sure they feel solid and not loose. If they do, you may need to tighten the nuts on the wheels a little bit.
  • Adjust the toe stop to a height that is comfortable to you.
  • Make sure the trucks are secured firmly to the roller skate.

Post-skate Checklist

Every time you act on that urge to skate, check a few things afterwards.

  • Have the wheels of your roller skates become loose? If so, be sure to tighten them to avoid it being dangerous.
  • If you rolled through a puddle or spilled drink, check to see if your bearings are wet afterwards. They WILL rust if left alone. Dry the skates with a rag and clean any muck accumulated with rubbing alcohol.

Additional Skate Maintenance

  • If your ride isn’t as smooth as it was, it’s is time to check the bearings. It might just need a little added lubrication.
  • Take your skates apart and clean them. This means removing the bearings, because if you are using dish soap it can damage them. So, clean the skate and once it is dry replace the bearings.
  • If those are a smelling a little funky, odors can be removed. Sprinkle some baking soda inside the skates and leave the insole out in the sun to dry out. This should eliminate the smell.

If you pay attention to the care of your roller skates, they can last for years to come. If you are looking to give your freshly maintained skates a spin, come visit us in the rink!

Keep Blisters Out of Your Roller Skating Experience

August 18, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

A few aches and pains can make any physical activity almost unbearable, but when participating in socksa sporting event, it is pretty much inevitable. And as much as we would like it, roller skating is not excluded from this. Other than a bump or bruise from a fall, one of the most common roller skating pains stems from the feet. Blisters. If you skate long enough and frequently enough, blisters will most likely happen to you too. A bad enough blister can really ruin an otherwise great skate session, so how do we avoid them? Skate World Pasadena, located in Pasadena, TX, wants every skate session to be an enjoyable one, so here are our tips on how to keep your feet blister-free.

  • Properly Fitting Skates – This should be your first line of defense against pesky blisters forming. Blisters happen when there is too much friction between your foot and the inside of the skate. Be sure that when you rent or buy a pair of skates that they fit your foot well.
  • Toe Pushing – This is another huge contributor to blisters from roller skating. Many people when they skate tend to be “toe pushers.” Instead of pushing off with your toe while skating, push off with your whole foot to mitigate the heel moving up and down.
  • Double Up – If you feel that these dreaded blisters are unavoidable, double up on your socks and give you feet and extra layer of protection.

We wish you all happy skating! Keep up with more roller skating tips and rink news on our social media pages. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus.

Keep Your Child Safe in the Rink!

August 5, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Parents naturally want to be there to act as a human safety net whenever their child falters or falls.children roller skating But as much as any adult with children might wish it, they can’t be there 100% of the time. This reigns true for life, but it is also true in the roller rink. Roller skating is a great way for any kid to be social, learn some independence and participate in some form of regular physical activity. But even with all of these positives, roller skating doesn’t come without its fair share of tumbles and falls. Ensuring your child is equipped with the proper safety accessories and measures is key. Skate World Pasadena, located in Pasadena, TX, is here with everything you will need to keep your child safe in the rink.

  • Helmet – Head injuries are all too common within the world of sports and physical activities. If there was one piece of safety equipment to keep in the inventory, this would be the most important. Be sure the helmet fits snugly on the head and covers a good majority of the front and back of the head.
  • Proper Skates – Skates are not a one size and style fits all kind of thing. When purchasing a pair of skates be sure that the skates are comfortable and don’t slip while rolling around. Make sure brakes and wheels are secure before each session.
  • Appropriate Clothing – Clothing can serve a few different purposes when hitting the rink. One purpose can be to avoid unnecessary scrapes and bruise. If this is a major concern, wear long sleeves and pants to mitigate little injuries. Another thing to pay attention to is especially relevant to the pants. If pants are worn while roller skating, be sure they are not too long to avoid getting caught in the wheels.
  • Pads – Another major source of injury while roller skating comes from elbows, knees and wrists. Elbow pads, knee pads and wrist braces are great pieces of equipment to keep in the rink bag.

To Rent or to Buy? That is the Question

July 22, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

We see a lot of people walk through our doors, here, at Skate World Pasadena in Pasadena, TX. From people who have never skated a day in their life, to those who are here every time rental skatesour hours permit. Each individual skater has their own approach to the rink. Some people like to jam skate, while others prefer to casually roll around rink. Some are die hard quad skaters, and others gravitate towards inline. We are always happy to rent out a pair of skates, but some skaters bring their own. If you can’t decide whether or not to purchase your own skates or keep renting, check out this list of pros and cons for each!

Renting

  • If you have a young child, he/she is going to go through many growth spurts. A skate that you buy today may not fit tomorrow!
  • Don’t need to worry about bringing your skates from home. You’ll always have a pair of skates here!
  • If you only skate every so often (and why would you, it’s so much fun!) it might save you the big expensive of owning your own.

Buying

  • If you are an avid roller skater, you can save a little extra money! While it is more expensive to purchase skates in the beginning, over time you’ll save more money.
  • One big advantage of buying your own skates is that you have the opportunity to select a pair that best fits your own feet. If comfort is a big thing for you, buying a pair is the way to go.
  • It comes with added bonus of picking out a style that best suits you! Red skates, green skates, blue skates or whatever you like! Everyone has their own traits that make them unique, and buying skates gives you the opportunity to express that!

Skate Through Time with Us!

June 24, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

It is not a thought many of us have, but when our wheels hit that rink floor, more than two centuriesHistorical Roller Skating of history and tinkering occurred to bring us to where we are today. It is difficult to imagine a world without roller skating, but there once was a time when the terms “roller rink” or “roller skating” meant nothing. Now, you may be a little curious as to how all of this got its start, and what influences happened along the way, but two centuries is a lot to sort through. Skate World Pasadena in Pasadena, TX has compiled a timeline of the pivotal moments in roller skating history to make it a little easier on you!

Roller Skating Timeline

  • 1743: This is the first ever recorded account of anyone using anything like roller skates. These first skates were used in a London stage performance, and the inventor is unknown.
  • 1760: The first roller skates are invented! Though the first account was in the stage performance, this is the first ever actual invention of what we know today. These skates were actually inline, believe it or not, and had small metal wheels. The inventor was John Joseph Merlin.
  • 1819: First patented roller skate design, in France by M. Petitbled. These skates are more similar to what we know today. It was very difficult to maneuver in this early design, and was difficult to do much else but move in a straight line.
  • 1857: Roller skating has finally gained enough popularity by this point and has warranted the opening of the first public rinks! They were held at The Strand in London and Floral Hall.
  • 1863: The quad roller skate makes its first appearance. Designed by James Leonard Plimpton in New York City, this model of roller skate made it easier for the skater to turn.
  • 1880: Roller skates are beginning to be mass produced in America, and is experiencing a boom in popularity.
  • 1902: The Chicago Coliseum opens a public skating rink, and more than 7,000 people attend the grand opening.
  • 1916: The first appearance of roller skates on the big screen is in the Charlie Chaplain film, “The Rink.”
  • 1979: Scott Olson and Brennan Olson set out to redesign the skate by using a 1960’s inline skate design and using modern materials and an ice hockey boot. Scott Olson begins promoting the skate, and creates Rollerblade, Inc.
  • Adjustments to the skates are made over the course of the next decades, and with a bit of tweaking and honing, we have arrived at what we have today!
