Roller Skates: Renting v. Buying

August 30, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

colorful roller skatesWhen it comes to skates, there are a lot of options to choose from. If you’ve been skating for a while and are starting to feel comfortable zipping around the rink, one option you could be considering is buying your own pair of skates.

At Skate World Pasadena, we wanted to give you some tips so you know if renting or buying skates is right for you.

Advantages of Renting

There are certainly some good reasons to keep renting skates, especially if you come to the same skating center in Pasadena, TX often.

The main advantage of renting your skates comes when you’re relatively new to the game. Renting allows you to fine-tune your skate size and feel out what type of skater you are. There are a lot of different styles out there and you definitely want to make sure your skills are advancing before you pick one.

Renting is also a great way to take advantage of our roller skating center with no strings attached. If you only skate once in a while and want to come and go empty handed, renting is the way to go!

Time to Buy

When you’ve been spending more and more time at the rink, it might be time to buy your own skates. The advantages of buying your own pair of skates are many. First, you always get the right size. Having a pair of skates that fit you perfectly every time will make your skating experience way better!

Having the right fit will make you a better skater, too. If you’re at the point where you’re thinking about buying your own skates, you’re probably getting pretty advanced! Rental skates are great for a casual cruise around the rink but when you’re thinking about speed skating, roller derby, jam skating or skate dancing, you’re going to want a very specific style of skate.

Talk to the Pros!

At Skate World, we have an awesome staff who are always happy to impart some knowledge. From little tips to full lessons, we have what it takes to get you to the next level. And when you decide it is time to buy, our pro shop has all the options you’ll need.

But before school gets started, there are some fun summer Pasadena activities you can do with your child to help prepare them for a successful and fun school year!

Reconnect with Old Friends

Your child has most likely lost touch with some of their close friends and classmates over the long summer break. If that’s the case, now is the perfect time to help them reconnect! Help ease the transition of back-to-school by encouraging your child to do some fun activities with old friends, like planning a trip to SkateWorld Pasadena!

Plan a Play Date with New Classmates

Of course, your child is also likely to meet some new classmates. To help smooth the transition, and to help them adjust to their new social environment, consider planning a social outing for these new friends too. This can help solidify new relationships and help ease the social anxiety of new classmates that can come with a new school year.

Get Some Exercise

According to the CDC, 78.4% of U.S. children simply aren’t getting enough exercise. In additional to its physical benefit, children who get enough exercise are also better able to concentrate and tend to get better grades! That’s why it’s a great idea to start the school year off right by exercising with your child before school starts back. 4 Tips to Sharpen Your Roller Skating Etiquette

June 22, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatingWhether you’re skating for the first time or the millionth time, it’s important to follow certain roller skating etiquette tips to ensure a good time for everyone. Take a look at four simple tips to follow to keep everyone happy:

Follow the Flow of Traffic

Although there aren’t any stoplights or stop signs at roller skating rinks, there is definitely a flow of traffic that should be respected. Normally, people start skating a certain way around the rink. If you choose to go against the flow of traffic, an accident may occur.

Give Other Skaters Space

To avoid bumping into others, give your friends and the other skaters around you plenty of space. Also, respect the skaters who are in the middle of the rink practicing roller skating tricks. If you have the need for speed, stick to the outskirts of the rink and continue with the traffic.

Check Your Skates Before Skating

When your laces are tight and your wheels are secure, you will be able to skate with confidence! So, before stepping onto the rink, check your skates to make sure they are safe. This will help you avoid any unnecessary accidents and/or injuries.

Have a Great Time

Laughter and smiles are contagious. (We know because we see it happen all the time at Skate World Pasadena!) So, when you’re here, have fun! You will get a great workout, spend time with friends, and enjoy racing around the rink.

Are you ready for a good time? Take a look at our schedule, then head to Skate World Pasadena for hours of endless fun!

Health Benefits of Roller Skating You Didn’t Know

June 1, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatingRoller skating is a fun way to exercise! But, did you know that it’s more than just an entertaining activity? It has incredible health benefits. From boosting your emotional health to burning calories, this activity can be labeled a workout and social activity. Consider the following health benefits of roller skating:

Boosts Your Emotional Health

When doctors talk to you about your health-related quality of life, they are likely referring to your physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s important to take steps to boost each of these elements, but did you know that roller skating is great for your emotional health? When you skate, you are exercising; and, when you exercise, you are releasing “feel-good” hormones in your brain called endorphins. They actually make you happy. It’s no wonder you leave the roller skating rink full of joy!

Burns Calories & Increases Endurance

Have you heard the recent saying, “sitting is the new smoking”? It means that sitting for long periods of time is very unhealthy for you. But, many jobs in America require people to sit for eight hours a day, five days a week. It’s difficult to burn calories by sitting 40 hours a week. But, with roller skating, you can burn calories at a rate of 600 calories an hour. Additionally, when you skate, you are increasing your endurance levels and you are more prepared to try cool skating tricks.

Strengthens the Heart

February may be Heart Health Month, but we should be monitoring our heart health all year long. According to The Heart Health Foundation, “Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.” Fortunately, heart disease can be prevented! And, yes, you guessed it … with roller skating! Skating for at least 30 minutes can increase your heart rate to roughly 150 beats per minute.

Head over to Skate World Pasadena right now for hours of endless fun! Check out our schedule, grab some friends or family members, and start skating!

Impress Your Friends with These Skating Tricks

May 24, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

If you’ve been practicing your skating skills and you’re ready to take it up a notch, why not learn some tricks? These will really impress your friends and family, and learning something new will keep your mind sharp over the summer.

  • Jumping. This trick is simple but looks cool. First of all, learn how to glide for long distances, and make sure you know how to fall safely. Then practice jumping and landing on your skates by hanging on to a low wall for support. Once you’re comfortable with this motion, start from a long glide. Bend your knees, bring your feet close together, and jump straight up! While you’re in the air, make sure you straighten up a bit. Bend your knees before you land.
  • Barrel Rolls. A 360-degree turn is easier than it sounds. Lead with one skate forward, then push the other across it and turn your body in the same direction. Shift your weight onto this foot and drag the first behind. By the time you’re done, you should be facing your original direction.
  • Heel-Toe. This trick is deceptively simple but requires a lot of balance. Essentially you’re going to move forward on the toe wheels of one skate and the heel wheels of the other. Your strongest foot should be the lead skate–lift the toes of this skate first. Once you’ve balanced like this, lift the heel of your other foot and you’re all set!

Not quite ready for these tricks? Don’t forget that Skate World Pasadena offers beginner skate lessons!

Care and Feeding of Your Roller Skates

April 12, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

Spring is finally here, and you know what that means–it’s time for spring cleaning! In the spirit of organization and tidiness, let’s take a look at the care and feeding something you might not always think about: your roller skates. Roller skate maintenance isn’t just good for your skates themselves. Keeping your equipment in good working order will make for a safer skate as well as an easier time maneuvering around the skate floor.

Every Time You Skate

  • Wipe down the boot. A quick wipe with a soft cloth will remove debris and sweat.
  • Air out your skates. Unlace them and leave them open to dry out inside. Otherwise, your foot sweat can mildew!
  • Safety note: never put your skates near or on top of a heat source to dry them. This can cause them to melt or even catch fire.

Periodically

  • Check your wheels. They should be secured to the truck, and free of chips, cracks, and debris.
  • Check your toe stops. They should be secured to the boot. If they are adjustable, make sure they’re still in the position you like.
  • Check your truck. This is the metal part underneath the skate that holds the wheels. Most beginner and even intermediate skaters will want this to be nice and tight. Even if you loosen it for more maneuverability, make sure it’s not so loose that it’s going to fall off.

Roller skates are an investment, but with proper care, they pay off quickly. Take care of your skates and they will take care of you for years of fun at Skate World Pasadena!
