How to Prevent (& Treat) Roller Skating Blisters

October 24, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skating blistersThe worst feeling after an awesome time at the skating rink is taking off your skates and realizing a blister has formed. Blisters are actually good for your skin because it protects the damaged skin. But, they can be extremely uncomfortable. With proper treatment, you’ll be skating again at Skate World in no time!

View our hours, then come skate with us today!

Check out how to prevent roller skating blisters and how to treat them if one forms.

Prevent Roller Skating Blisters

The most common cause of roller skating blisters is friction. When your feet rub against your socks and roller skates, friction occurs. Too much rubbing will cause the skin to be damaged, and a blister will form. To avoid excess friction, consider these tips:

  • Add a blister pad to the blister-prone area.
  • Push off with your whole foot instead of with your toes.
  • Put on the right-sized skates. Skates that are too small cause excess friction.
  • Wear thick socks to pad your feet.

How to Treat Blisters

Fortunately, with the right treatment, blisters go away rather quickly. Make sure you don’t burst the bubble that has formed. The bubble and the liquid inside are contributing to the healing process. To help your blister heal, consider these tips:

  • Avoid wearing tight shoes or skates for several days.
  • Keep the blister and the surrounding area clean.
  • Wear a loose bandage to protect the blister from bursting.

We hope that you never have to deal with roller skating blisters. But, if you do, take care of the blister and head back to Skate World as soon as possible! We look forward to skating with you soon.

Giving Monetary Donations after Harvey

Monetary donations are the best way to help people affected by this damaging storm, especially from a distance. If you are going to give a monetary donation, be sure to research the organization you are giving to beforehand. Organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund and United Way Relief Fund ensure your money will go straight to helping those who have lost everything.

Skating for Better Health!

August 30, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

We know roller skating at Skate World Pasadena is a ton of fun. But did you know that it’s also good for you? It’s true–roller skating is great exercise! Take a look at all the health benefits of skating. children roller skating

  • Cardio. When you skate at a moderate or vigorous pace, your heart has to work harder to pump blood. This exercise makes your heart stronger so it doesn’t have to work as hard the rest of the time. Not only that, but more cardio exercise means more oxygen gets to the brain. Roller skating is about the same as jogging in terms of benefits to your heart, lungs, and respiratory system, and is much easier on your joints (not to mention more fun)!
  • Strength. Skating requires balance and strength, which means it works a lot of muscles. Your legs will get a great workout, but so will the muscles in your abdomen and back (also called your core). The core is important for balance and posture, and strengthening it can help prevent back pain. Your arms will even get in on the action–they aid in balance!
  • Mental Health. Not only does skating benefit your body, it’s also good for your brain. Exercise releases endorphins, which can improve mood and even help with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Spending time with family and friends while listening to great music is a great mood-booster too!

Don’t know how to skate? No worries! Learning a new skill is also great for your health. Check out the skating lessons at Skate World Pasadena!

Teach Your Child How to Skate

August 9, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Roller-skating is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Even kids as young as two or three years old can learn to roller skate! Here are a few things to keep in mind when teaching your child to skate:

  • colorful roller skatesSelect the right skates for your child’s age and size. Some skates are adjustable so you can expand them as your child’s feet grow, while others are great for passing down to younger siblings.
  • Make sure your child has well-fitting protective gear such as a helmet, knee pads, and wrist guards.
  • Find a smooth, level place to practice. A flat patch of grass is a great place to begin.
  • Start slow and focus on the basics: balance, posture, and rolling. As your child gets more comfortable on skates, show them how to use their feet to push off and to stop.
  • Falls are inevitable when learning to skate, so make sure your child knows how to fall safely. Show them how to lean in a way that lets their thighs, not their wrists or head, absorb the impact.

Find a Skating Teacher

If you don’t have the skill or patience to teach your child how to skate, you might want to leave this job to a professional. Whether your child needs private instruction or would do better in a group, skating lessons are a great way for your child to have fun and develop a love of exercise.

What’s Your Skating Style?

July 25, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

When it comes to skating competitions, skate lessons, or skating practice, comfortable, breathable clothing rules the rink. But what do you wear to a skating birthday party, on a roller skating date, or when you want to dress to impress in those Instagram pics? Skate World Pasadena has you covered with our roller-skating style guide.

What to Wear to a Skating Rink

  1. fashion girl in skatesJeans. Everybody owns a pair of stretchy denims, and these are a go-to style choice for a “casual but cute” vibe at the skating rink. Pair with a cozy t-shirt for a day out with the family or a cute blouse or button up for a retro skate date.
  2. Shorts. High waisted shorts are still in fashion, and good thing, too! Nothing says “90’s inline skater” or “60’s skating queen” like high waisted shorts and a tasteful crop top. Shorts are a great look for guys, too. Pair classic khakis or colorful linen shorts with a printed short-sleeve button down. Going for comfort? Wear loose, stretchy print shorts with a solid color top.
  3. Activewear. Athletic gear is getting cuter and cuter, and we’re totally onboard with the effortless style it affords. For a look that’s perfect for pics, tricks, and everything in between, try a breezy top and moisture-wicking yoga leggings with a fun print or mesh inlay. For the guys, athletic shorts and screen-printed tees are always a solid choice.
  4. Dresses. As long as they’re comfortable, dresses are the perfect pick for a day at the rink. Pair with spandex shorts to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions, and you’re ready to roll.
  5. Whatever strikes your fancy! We want to see you show off your skating style. From your head to your toes, your style is totally unique. Top off your look with a fun accessory like a sparkly headband or superhero laces for your roller-skates. And don’t forget to mention Skate World Pasadena when you post your pics online!

The Best Birthday Skating Games

July 12, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Want to shake things up at your child’s birthday party? Roller-skating games are a great way to get every guest laughing and having fun. It’s also a tried-and-true trick for helping rambunctious partygoers skate off their excess energy. If you have a summer birthday party planned, you won’t want to miss our favorite roller-skating games.

3 Games for a Kids’ Skating Party

  1. dj adjusts volumeMusical Squares. Using tape, mark out squares on the rink, arranged in a circle. You should have one fewer squares than skaters. Have the players skate around the circle, outside the ring of squares. When the music stops, each player must skate to the closest square. The person who doesn’t claim a square is eliminated! After each round, be sure to mark off one square with an X, so you’ll always have one fewer squares than players.
  2. Hat tricks. Get two party hats and fill each with slips of paper. Your guests’ names should go into one hat, and instructions for silly skating tricks in the other. Pull one slip of paper out of each hat. The skater must perform the trick to the judge’s satisfaction, or they’re out of the game! For example, if “the sister of the birthday boy” matches up with “skate backwards on one foot,” she’ll have to show off her skating skills or hit the bench.
  3. Freeze skate. Test out your jam skating skills with a roller-skating dance off . . . with a twist. When the music stops, so must the skaters. Any skater who keeps dancing is eliminated from the round until a single skater remains.

Ready to party? Book a kids’ birthday bash at Skate World Pasadena.
