How to Help Those Affected By Hurricane Harvey

September 9, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Intense FloodingOur neighboring metropolis, Houston, suffered intense damage due to Hurricane Harvey. Thousands of people are misplaced, homes are destroyed, and life seems to be at a standstill. However, America has stepped up to help the people affected by Hurricane Harvey, and Skate World wants to do the same.

Take a look at four ways we can join forces to help the relief efforts:

Donate Money

Donating money is extremely helpful for organizations during a time of crisis. They are able to use the money to buy essential items immediately. Remember when donating money to make sure the organization is credible. You can view a list of established, legitimate organizations here.

Donate Food

Local food banks are distributing food to those in need, but the food supply is running low. Non-perishable food items are needed such as cereal bars, power bars, beef jerky, applesauce, crackers, etc.

Donate Blood

Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey injured many people. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center needs over 2,000 units of blood, specifically O positive and O negative, to aid those who lost blood. Donating blood is donating life. Find a blood drive near you.

Donate Supplies

Shelters need your donations to help the people of Houston. Clothes of all sizes will help clothe those affected by the storm since many left their homes with nothing but the shirt on their back. Toys such as puzzles or books are greatly appreciated for the many kids who are in shelters and need to be preoccupied.

Because of the unstable situation in Houston and the overabundance of standing water, it is vital that rescue and relief efforts are left to trained professionals. However, with your donation, you are contributing greatly!

How Young Can a Child Learn to Skate?

July 26, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Roller-skating is an activity that, once learned, will keep a kid entertained until they have kids and grandkids of their own. Unlike many family activities, skating is just as much fun for a 7 year old as a 17 year old, and it’s still fun when you’re 70! But how do you know when your child is old enough to learn to skate?

What’s a Good Age to Learn to Skate?

young boy skatingBalance is key when it comes to mastering roller-skates. Most young toddlers don’t have the agility necessary to stay upright on skates, which is a trickier skill than walking or running. But by the time kids reach preschool age, their innate sense of balance has improved enough that they should have no problem learning to skate. If your 4 or 5 year old shows an interest in roller-skating, let them learn! Skate World has classes to teach them the skating basics step-by-step, so they’re confident the first time they hit the rink. It’s also a good idea for young kids to use a Skate Mate, skate near a wall, or skate holding a parent’s hand until they’re confident balancing on their own. But watch out! Once they master their wheels, they’ll be cruising all over the place. We call that a win for your next family play day.

Skate World Deer Park is the place to be, whether you’re looking for roller-skating lessons or a fun place to practice with the kids. Visit us 6 days a week during summer skating sessions, which end on August 28th.

Team Building Games Your Office Will Actually Enjoy

July 12, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Team Building Promotes ProductivityCorporate skating parties are a great way to build office camaraderie, congratulate your team for their hard work, and instill a renewed passion for your company in every employee. And what corporate outing would be complete without team building games? Skip the trust falls and awkward get-to-know-you exercises; your whole office will love these roller-skating team building games.

The Possibilities Are Endless . . .

Teach your team to think more creatively about everyday objects. First break into small teams. Hand each team an object, like a notebook or a pool noodle. Each person must demonstrate a creative use for that object. After everyone has had a turn, ask the teams to come up with one last demonstration as a group. The truly inventive teams will incorporate their skates into the exercise!

Overcoming Every Obstacle

We recommend added safety precautions (such as kneepads) for this one. Split your company into teams. You can divide the teams based on department, or mix things up to encourage overall company cohesion. Each team must choose a spokesperson, a skater, and a spotter. The skaters will put on blindfolds (and skating pads, if you have them). Once their eyes are safely covered, the judge will arrange obstacles like traffic cones around the rink. Each team’s spokesperson will coach their skater through the obstacle course, while the spotter skates beside them, ready to intervene in case of trouble. Each intervention means docked points, so the better the communication between the spokesperson and the skater, the better each team will do!

Every Person Counts

Relay races are a classic skating game that teach teamwork skills. Divide into teams, and have each team number off their skaters. This lets each person know when to get into position. Give the first round skaters a baton, and you’re off to the races! After completing a lap of the rink, each skater must pass the baton to the next person on their team. In the end, it will take every skater to win.

Do You Know How to Beat the Heat?

May 11, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

What do you do when the kids go into couch potato mode? Send them outside! Summer means there’s always something to do, from outdoor sports to pool time to trips to the park and playground. But summer also means kids have a higher risk for heat exhaustion. Protect your kids from the summer sun with these tips from Skate World Deer Park.

Heat Safety for Kids

Kids are more likely to dehydrate or get heat exhaustion than their parents. That’s because kids’ bodies have fewer sweat glands, so they can’t adapt as quickly to extreme temperatures. Heat stroke is a serious risk during summers in Texas. To protect your child from heat stroke, practice summer sun safety:

  • child outside drinking waterNever leave your child in a parked car
  • Don’t play outside during the hottest part of the day (11am to 4pm)
  • Apply a sweat-resistant sunscreen 30 minutes before playing outside (and reapply often)
  • Move to the shade when the kids start getting tired
  • Save high-exertion activities for overcast days
  • Keep everyone well hydrated with water and electrolyte-rich sports drinks
  • Be on the lookout for symptoms of heat-illness in your kids

Summer Fun (Out of the Sun)

Beat the heat with summer skating! When you visit Skate World Deer Park, you never have to worry about heat exhaustion, sunburn, or dehydration. The kids can skate for hours in our air-conditioned roller-skating center. We also have a snack bar stocked with pizza, nachos, chips, candy bars, drinks, and other refreshments so the kids can stay energized while they skate. Sign the kids up for summer skating lessons and enjoy our summer sessions as a family.

How to Plan the Ultimate Spring Break Staycation

March 13, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Do you ever feel like you need a vacation . . .  after going on vacation? Family trips can be fun, but they’re also full of meltdowns, mishaps, and general mayhem. Skip the stress and get some rest. Skate World Deer Park has 4 fun tips for the ultimate staycation.

How to Plan the Ultimate Staycation

  1. family relaxing in bedMake a ‘Not To Do’ List. Your staycation is about relaxing, recharging, and ramping up the fun. Don’t get distracted with laundry, errands, and work emails. Tackle your to-do list before spring break starts, just like you would for a road trip.
  2. Meal prep. Moms and Dads, put the cutting boards away. No cooking on your staycation! Instead, stock the freezer with easy, pre-made items like casseroles or treat yourself to your favorite takeout.
  3. Live in the lap of luxury. You’d be amazed at what a big difference little treats make. But how can you pretend you’re at a 5 star resort without doing the work yourself? Assign each member of the family 1 Fairy Godmother Day. On their day, that person is—you guessed it—the fairy godmother for the rest of the family. Plan ahead with fun treats like chocolate kisses on the pillows, hand-written notes, and (if your kids are old enough to be trusted in the kitchen) breakfast in bed.
  4. Go on an adventure. Explore the trees behind your house, take a stroll through the local park, and head into Houston to visit the Museum of Fine Arts. And don’t miss spring break fun at Skate World! We have special deals, longer hours, and nonstop skating, rain or shine.

Make memories this spring break at Skate World Deer Park.
