Roller Skating: Let’s Get Started!

July 8, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

So, you’re thinking of trying your hand at lacing up a pair of skates and hitting the rink? Firstly, welcome to one of the most fun and addicting activities we can imagine!roller skating  Upon first glance, roller skating might seem like a scary thing to just jump in and try, but once you have a basic foundation of skill, it’s a breeze! So where do we get started? Skate World Deer Park in Deer Park, TX has a checklist of things to get you well underway to being a roller skating pro!

What will you need?

  • Obviously, in order to roller skate, you need the skates. But since you are a first timer, some safety equipment is a great tool to have while you’re learning. Elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet will help keep you protected while you’re getting the hang of things.

When your skates hit the rink

  • You’re all geared up, so now it’s time for the fun part! Before you start rolling around the rink, and doing tricks, you need to know the basics.
    • Place your feet shoulder width apart.
    • Bend you knees and squat slightly. This will give you a bit more spring, and aid your balance.
    • Find a sweet spot with this general stance that you feel comfortable with.
  • You’ve got the stance down, now let’s get moving!
    • To start rolling around the rink, position your toes outward and your heels inward.
    • Practice walking like this until you find your balance. You may fall a few times trying to get it just right, but that’s what the pads are for! After a while, you will gain more confidence and be well on your way.
    • Start to move your feet more quickly, and take longer strides.
    • Begin to push off harder with one foot while you glide on the other. Glide farther and farther distances

Look, you’re roller skating! It’s always a great idea to take someone with you that has previous experience to help get you up to speed. Plan your next visit to the rink and check out our hours!

Adjust Those Laces for a Better Skate!

June 24, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

roller skate lacing

Improperly fitting roller skates can be extremely frustrating, and if you are a beginner, it can bend that learning curve even more than it already was. But a skate that doesn’t fit quite right, doesn’t always mean that you selected the wrong size for your foot. While this is a very definite possibility, you may also just need to simply adjust the laces.  Like skates, feet come in all different shapes and sizes, and sometimes minor tweaks need to be made. Skate World Deer Park in Deer Park, TX wants to see everyone in our rink having nothing less than a great time! So, follow these lacing tips if you are someone who is struggling with this.

  • High Arches? If you have really high arches that cause the tops of your feet to be raised a little higher than most, relieve that pressure. Roller skates are supposed to be a little snug, but not uncomfortable.
  • Is your heel slipping? If this is you, and you have been fitted for skates by someone who is knowledgable, try this lacing technique that will help alleviate this issue.
  • Toe problems? Let’s raise them up a bit! This particular lacing method will help to alleviate hammer toes, toe corn, nail problems and any other painful toes issues you might experience with your toes.
