Tips for Skating Like a Pro

October 26, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

bend your knees

Want to step up your skating game? At Skate World Deer Park, we’re here to give you some tips to take your skating to the next level! Whether you’re a beginner or skate at an intermediate level, there’s always room for improvement. The tips below have worked for us in the past, and we’re sure they’ll help you up your skating game. Check them out and then roll over during open skating hours to test out your new moves!

It’s All in the Knees!

It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing traditional quad skates, in-line skates, speed skates, or derby skates, you have to have the proper stance. When you try to skate with locked knees, the only place you’re going is to the floor. Skating with bent knees gives you the control and balance you need to get good. The bend should be soft. You don’t want to be in a squat. Instead, keep a slight bend and keep your knees loose.

Relax and Have Fun

The tenser you are, the harder it will be to skate at all, let alone with any grace. When you start to get a feel for rolling around the rink, try to take it to the next level by relaxing your body and feeling the flow. Skating is all about flow, so the more you can relax out there, the better you will skate and the more fun you will have.

Learn to Fall

It doesn’t matter how good you are or how long you’ve been zipping around the rink, everybody falls. The trick is to learn how to fall the right way. It’s strongly recommended that beginners wear protective gear like elbow and knee pads. These will cushion the blow until you become a little more comfortable in your skates. However, when you do go down, it’s important to try rolling into the impact. If you’re falling backward, try to land slightly to one side or the other rather than straight down on the tailbone.

There are some great videos on the art of the fall that should help you with your technique. And remember, the best way to improve your skills is to get out and skate! Come visit us at Skate World Deer Park during our open skating hours and get rolling today!

Health Benefits of Roller Skating

October 18, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

It’s National Roller Skating Month! Of course, we’re excited to celebrate at Skate World Deer Park, where we love roller skating more than anything else. Skating isn’t just fun, it’s also good for you! Check out some of the health benefits of roller skating:

  • Calorie Burning. Skatinroller skating weeknightsg at a moderate pace for half an hour can burn around 250 calories! That’s comparable to jogging, with much less stress on your joints. Your knees and hips will thank you for taking the easy way for them.
  • Cardio. Just like running, jogging, or swimming, roller skating is great cardio exercise. It strengthens your lungs, your heart, and your cardiovascular system, which means these organs don’t have to work as hard the rest of the time.
  • Muscles. Skating obviously strengthens the muscles in your legs. But think about it–you also use your arms for balance, and the very important muscles in your abdomen, sides, and back, also known as your core. The core is responsible for posture; having a strong core can even help to treat or prevent back pain.
  • The Brain! That’s right, skating isn’t just good for your body. Exercise has been shown to help reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Learning a new skill will keep your mind sharp, and studies suggest it can help stave off dementia.

With so many health benefits, what are you waiting for? Bring your families and friends and join us for open skate sessions or lessons to celebrate National Roller Skating Month at Skate World Deer Park!

STEM Field Trips at Skate World Deer Park

September 29, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

Are you looking for the greatest field trip ever? Look no further! Skate World Deer Park is now booking STEM Field Trips as part of our Rolling with Science STEM Program. STEM careers are still growing. What better way to get your students excited about math, science, engineering, and technology than by showing them how they related to fun activities like skating?

The Science of Skating engages students in a 45-minute lesson on science topics, covering Sir Isaac Newton and his Three Laws of Motion, force, balance, and even the movements of the Earth and the rest of the solar system. Then students have another hour and 45 minutes to put their lessons to work in the skating rink. Roller skating is an pendulumexcellent example of these principles! Every aspect of skating clearly demonstrates the Laws of Motion, all the way from starting to turning to jumping to stopping. Students who are exposed to these ideas in a fun, engaging way will never again utter the dreaded phrase, “but how will we use this?”

Groups can add lunch, snacks, and additional attractions to their field trip depending on their needs. Pricing is always customized based on the size of your group and any extras you might want, because education isn’t one size fits all, and we don’t believe field trips should be either!

It’s never too early to book field trips, but it can be too late. Give Skate World Deer Park a call today while spots are available so we can discuss your group. We can’t wait to see your students in our skating center!

How to Help Those Affected By Hurricane Harvey

September 9, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Intense FloodingOur neighboring metropolis, Houston, suffered intense damage due to Hurricane Harvey. Thousands of people are misplaced, homes are destroyed, and life seems to be at a standstill. However, America has stepped up to help the people affected by Hurricane Harvey, and Skate World wants to do the same.

Take a look at four ways we can join forces to help the relief efforts:

Donate Money

Donating money is extremely helpful for organizations during a time of crisis. They are able to use the money to buy essential items immediately. Remember when donating money to make sure the organization is credible. You can view a list of established, legitimate organizations here.

Donate Food

Local food banks are distributing food to those in need, but the food supply is running low. Non-perishable food items are needed such as cereal bars, power bars, beef jerky, applesauce, crackers, etc.

Donate Blood

Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey injured many people. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center needs over 2,000 units of blood, specifically O positive and O negative, to aid those who lost blood. Donating blood is donating life. Find a blood drive near you.

Donate Supplies

Shelters need your donations to help the people of Houston. Clothes of all sizes will help clothe those affected by the storm since many left their homes with nothing but the shirt on their back. Toys such as puzzles or books are greatly appreciated for the many kids who are in shelters and need to be preoccupied.

Because of the unstable situation in Houston and the overabundance of standing water, it is vital that rescue and relief efforts are left to trained professionals. However, with your donation, you are contributing greatly!

Skating Games for Extra Fun

August 30, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

At Skate World Deer Park, we know the skating rink is a great place to spend some time with your family. Next time you’re skating with your loved ones, try these games to make it even more fun! We might even play one of them during our next open skate hours!

skating games

  • Relay Races. Turn racing into a cooperative game by racing in teams! Make sure to match up skaters of similar age, so that young kids aren’t racing in the same lap as adults.
  • Freeze Tag. This variation on tag makes things a little more interesting. One person is “It,” just like normal, and when they tag someone, that person has to freeze. Another skater can then tag the frozen person to “Unfreeze” them. If everyone gets frozen, the person who is “It” wins!
  • Four Corners. This game starts with everyone skating in a circle, as usual. Each corner gets a number. When the music stops, the designated person closes their eyes and everyone skates to one of the corners. The designated person calls out a number, and everyone in that corner is eliminated. The game continues until only one person is left, and that person wins!
  • Limbo. Roller skates add a unique challenge to this classic game. Make sure not to touch the bar or the ground–that’s how you get disqualified.

Not a great skater? No worries! At Skate World Deep Park we also offer lessons! These skating games will bring your family together and help everyone get active while having fun.

The Importance of Exercising & Roller Skating After School

August 11, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatingWhat if there was a secret ingredient for your child to succeed in school? Well, the ingredient does exist, but it’s no secret. It’s exercise! Exercise has proven to help children succeed academically, physically, emotionally, and mentally. At Skate World, we provide a safe avenue for your child to exercise while having an awesome time.

Bring your child to our roller skating rink after school!

After-school exercise is vital for your child’s academic success, positive attitude, social interaction, and more. Check out these reasons why exercise is so important.

Academic Success

It’s been proven that exercise helps the development of the brain. Children who exercise are more likely to make good grades and graduate high school in comparison to children who do not exercise regularly. When children exercise, they are releasing physical energy that is built up inside them. This allows them to use their energy to concentrate and learn new academic material much easier.

Positive Attitude

When a child exercises, endorphins are released. Endorphins are known as “feel good” chemicals that your body releases. The release of endorphins keeps your brain sharp, protects your heart, offers relief from stress, connects you to others, and provides plenty more benefits to kids.

Social Interaction

Exercise is a great tool for your kiddo to develop friendships! Playing with others teaches them how to interact, share, communicate, and much more. Is your child shy? Giving her the right facility to meet new people (i.e. the roller rink, playground, etc.) will enable her to meet new friends and stay active.

Check out our hours of operation and FAQs. We look forward to seeing you and your kiddo race around the rink at Skate World Deer Park!

How Young Can a Child Learn to Skate?

July 26, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Roller-skating is an activity that, once learned, will keep a kid entertained until they have kids and grandkids of their own. Unlike many family activities, skating is just as much fun for a 7 year old as a 17 year old, and it’s still fun when you’re 70! But how do you know when your child is old enough to learn to skate?

What’s a Good Age to Learn to Skate?

young boy skatingBalance is key when it comes to mastering roller-skates. Most young toddlers don’t have the agility necessary to stay upright on skates, which is a trickier skill than walking or running. But by the time kids reach preschool age, their innate sense of balance has improved enough that they should have no problem learning to skate. If your 4 or 5 year old shows an interest in roller-skating, let them learn! Skate World has classes to teach them the skating basics step-by-step, so they’re confident the first time they hit the rink. It’s also a good idea for young kids to use a Skate Mate, skate near a wall, or skate holding a parent’s hand until they’re confident balancing on their own. But watch out! Once they master their wheels, they’ll be cruising all over the place. We call that a win for your next family play day.

Skate World Deer Park is the place to be, whether you’re looking for roller-skating lessons or a fun place to practice with the kids. Visit us 6 days a week during summer skating sessions, which end on August 28th.

Team Building Games Your Office Will Actually Enjoy

July 12, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Team Building Promotes ProductivityCorporate skating parties are a great way to build office camaraderie, congratulate your team for their hard work, and instill a renewed passion for your company in every employee. And what corporate outing would be complete without team building games? Skip the trust falls and awkward get-to-know-you exercises; your whole office will love these roller-skating team building games.

The Possibilities Are Endless . . .

Teach your team to think more creatively about everyday objects. First break into small teams. Hand each team an object, like a notebook or a pool noodle. Each person must demonstrate a creative use for that object. After everyone has had a turn, ask the teams to come up with one last demonstration as a group. The truly inventive teams will incorporate their skates into the exercise!

Overcoming Every Obstacle

We recommend added safety precautions (such as kneepads) for this one. Split your company into teams. You can divide the teams based on department, or mix things up to encourage overall company cohesion. Each team must choose a spokesperson, a skater, and a spotter. The skaters will put on blindfolds (and skating pads, if you have them). Once their eyes are safely covered, the judge will arrange obstacles like traffic cones around the rink. Each team’s spokesperson will coach their skater through the obstacle course, while the spotter skates beside them, ready to intervene in case of trouble. Each intervention means docked points, so the better the communication between the spokesperson and the skater, the better each team will do!

Every Person Counts

Relay races are a classic skating game that teach teamwork skills. Divide into teams, and have each team number off their skaters. This lets each person know when to get into position. Give the first round skaters a baton, and you’re off to the races! After completing a lap of the rink, each skater must pass the baton to the next person on their team. In the end, it will take every skater to win.
