Stretch Before You Skate

January 2, 2017 by intake 2 Comments

roller skatingRoller skating is a wonderful way to get some exercise. If you’re like many people, you are setting a New Year’s Resolution to get in shape. One way to get in shape is to choose a fun activity like roller skating. And just like with any type of exercise, it’s important to warm up and stretch before you skate.

Roller Skating Stretches

Perform these every time you skate:

  • Jog or March in Place: Before you start your stretches, march or jog in place. Get your knees up in order to get your heart rate up.
  • Lunges: Your legs work hard when you skate, so make sure to warm them up! Do a few side and back lunges. For side lunges, step out to the side, just outside of your shoulder width. Go from side to side several times to really stretch those muscles.
  • Figure Four Stretch: A great stretch for the hips and glutes is the figure four stretch. Sit back into a shallow squat and shift all of your weight to your left leg. Cross your right foot over your left quad (safely above the knee). Sink back until you feel a stretch and hold. Repeat on the other side.
  • Improve Balance: This exercise will help improve your balance before you head out onto the rink. Bend your right knee and then slowly pick up the left foot and balance on one leg for as long as possible. Repeat this several times on each leg.
  • Standing Hamstring Stretch: Stand up straight and bend forward at the waist. Reach your hands towards your toes until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings. Hold for a few seconds and repeat.

We Want to Give Thanks to Our Customers!

November 23, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

We are growing ever-nearer to Thanksgiving, and already we detect the scent of feasts being prepared.
This season isn’t just about the dishes placed before us at the table though, it’s a time to reflect on our lives and what we are truly thankful for. This characteristic of the holiday is, in our opinion, just as important for businesses to ponder as it is for individuals. That being said, we want to take some time before the hustle and bustles of Thanksgiving day to write down what it is that we are all thankful for here at Skate World Deer Park!

  • thanks to our skatersFirst and foremost, without our patrons coming to skate week in and week out, we would not exist. We thank each and every one of you, from those who have visited us once to our regulars.
  • The energy you all bring! A rink is really just a wood floor without its skaters. The energy you bring to this place breathes life into what would otherwise just be another building.
  • Roller skating, of course! It’s hard to consider now, but there was once a point in time when roller skating did not exist! We are so thankful to live in a time when it does and to exist during a point in its history when roller skating is so advanced. There aren’t many things in this world we can say we love more than roller skating and most everything else is a distant second.

We hope your holiday is filled with laughter and love this year! We welcome you to come visit us after Thanksgiving is over this year to skate off the inevitable extra calorie or two. Happy Thanksgiving!

Keep Blisters Out of Your Roller Skating Routine

July 22, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Aches, pains and injuries; it all comes with the territory when playing a sport or participating in a roller skatesphysical activity. And even as perfect as roller skating is, it’s not excluded from this rule. Other than a small bump or bruise from a tumble in the rink, one of the most common roller skating pains comes from the feet. By this, we mean those dreaded blisters. If you skate long enough and frequently enough, blisters will most likely happen to you too. A bad enough blister can really ruin an otherwise great skate session, so how do we avoid them? Skate World Deer Park, located in Deer Park, TX,  wants every skate session to be an enjoyable one, so here are our tips on how to keep your feet blister-free.

  • Properly Fitting Skates – This should be your first line of defense against pesky blisters forming. Blisters happen when there is too much friction between your foot and the inside of the skate. Be sure that when you rent or buy a pair of skates that they fit your foot well.
  • Toe Pushing – This is another huge contributor to blisters from roller skating. Many people when they skate tend to be “toe pushers.” Instead of pushing off with your toe while skating, push off with your whole foot to mitigate the heel moving up and down.
  • Double Up – If you feel that these dreaded blisters are unavoidable, double up on your socks and give you feet and extra layer of protection.

We wish you all happy skating! Keep up with more roller skating tips and rink news on our social media pages. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus.
