Roller Skating Basics: What Do I Wear?

March 29, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

You’ve checked out the hours ar Skate World Deer Park and signed up for your skating lessons, but now comes the important question–what do you wear to go roller skating?

Let’s start from the ground up. First of all, always wear socks! This is totally non-negotiable. For one thing,  if you’re renting skates, we won’t let you do it without socks. Think about it: do you really want to wear skates that someone else’s bare feet have been in? We didn’t think so. For another thing, without socks, you’re setting yourself up for blisters in a big way. Your skating socks should be thick and long enough to peek out of the top of the skate boots.

Whether you wear pants, a skirt, or a dress, remember that it shouldn’t be long enough to get caught under your wheels. You’ll be leaning forward a lot, so if you go skating in a skirt or dress, consider a pair of shorts or leggings underneath. This is especially useful in the case of accidental falls. Make sure your clothes are comfortable and allow for plenty of movement, and remember that exercise makes you warmer, so plan to wear layers that you can strip off if you get overheated.

Don’t feel like you have to dress in a conservative or boring way, either! Roller skating is a great time to express yourself. Wear something colorful, fun, or off the wall if you want to–whatever clothes make you comfortable will help you have a great time at Skate World Deer Park!

Tips for Fitness Newbies!

January 12, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

Did you know that only about half of all adults get the recommended amount of exercise every day? No wonder so many people make New Year’s Resolutions to get in better shape every January! It can be daunting to get started if you haven’t exercised before, though, so here at Skate World Deer Park, we have some tips for fitness newbies!

  • Skip the Car. Walking, riding a bike, or roller skating to your destination will not only benefit your body, it will save money on gas and help protect the environment. Next time you’re only going a short distance, leave the car in the driveway and use your own power to get there.
  • Add Movement Whenever You Can. Take the stairs, park further away, and incorporate movement into your daily life. We all enjoy a good binge-watch of our favorite shows, so next time you’re vegging on the couch, add some exercises during commercial breaks.
  • Make it Fun. It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that it’s hard to do things that aren’t enjoyable! That’s why roller skating at Skate World Deer Park is such a great fitness tool: it’s not only a great workout that’s easy on your joints and your wallet, it’s also a ton of fun.

We offer open skate sessions most days of the week, making our skate center a great addition to your 2018 fitness plan. We’re working hard to get healthier this year, and we hope you’ll join us at Skate World Deer Park!

November 22, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

At Skate World in Deer Park, Texas, we want to give you some fun ways to help those in need during the holidays this year. Our community is the most important thing to us, and we want to do what we can to make sure everyone has enough this holiday season.

Volunteering over the holidays is a great way to give back to the community and teach your children a valuable lesson about the importance of being a good neighbor at the same time! We’ll be offering specials and teaming up with local charities to do our part, and here’s how you can help.

Donations Are Always Welcome!

Donating non-perishable items to your local food banks is a great way to get your kids involved. Have them help you go through your cabinets and decide what to donate. This will get them involved and help show your little ones how important it is to donate when you have more than others. Here’s a helpful list of nonperishable that are perfect for donating:

  • Canned fruits, pears, peaches, etc.
  • Whole grain products, brown rice, and oatmeal
  • Canned vegetables, green beans, corn, etc.
  • Canned chicken, beef or similar low-sodium proteins
  • Granola, protein bars, and nuts

Participate in Our FUN-draiser Parties!

Our skating center has a bunch of options when it comes to fundraisers. You can set one up with your own group to benefit an organization of your choice, or you can come in this December for our Skating with Santa FUN-draiser! Fundraisers during the holidays are a perfect way to give back while having the time of your life.

A party at the end of the season is a great chance for coaches and parents to reward players for all their hard work and dedication through the weeks and months of practice and games. It gives kids a chance to socialize with their teammates, sharing great memories and cementing the new friendships they’ve made. It also lets parents and coaches talk about successes and relax a bit outside the pressures of the season. You’ll have time for speeches, thank yous, awards, and even coach gifts!

Now you know why you should plan an end-of-season party, but where should you do it? That’s where Skate World Deer Park comes in! Our party packages are affordable–options start at just $7.50 per skater, with non-skating parents admitted free. You can choose a la carte food options and only order what your group will eat, or go all out and book an unlimited pizza buffet skating party. Active, athletic kids get hungry, and skating burns a lot of calories–why not let them indulge in all-you-can-eat pizza? Tips for Skating Like a Pro

October 26, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

bend your knees

Want to step up your skating game? At Skate World Deer Park, we’re here to give you some tips to take your skating to the next level! Whether you’re a beginner or skate at an intermediate level, there’s always room for improvement. The tips below have worked for us in the past, and we’re sure they’ll help you up your skating game. Check them out and then roll over during open skating hours to test out your new moves!

It’s All in the Knees!

It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing traditional quad skates, in-line skates, speed skates, or derby skates, you have to have the proper stance. When you try to skate with locked knees, the only place you’re going is to the floor. Skating with bent knees gives you the control and balance you need to get good. The bend should be soft. You don’t want to be in a squat. Instead, keep a slight bend and keep your knees loose.

Relax and Have Fun

The tenser you are, the harder it will be to skate at all, let alone with any grace. When you start to get a feel for rolling around the rink, try to take it to the next level by relaxing your body and feeling the flow. Skating is all about flow, so the more you can relax out there, the better you will skate and the more fun you will have.

Learn to Fall

It doesn’t matter how good you are or how long you’ve been zipping around the rink, everybody falls. The trick is to learn how to fall the right way. It’s strongly recommended that beginners wear protective gear like elbow and knee pads. These will cushion the blow until you become a little more comfortable in your skates. However, when you do go down, it’s important to try rolling into the impact. If you’re falling backward, try to land slightly to one side or the other rather than straight down on the tailbone.

There are some great videos on the art of the fall that should help you with your technique. And remember, the best way to improve your skills is to get out and skate! Come visit us at Skate World Deer Park during our open skating hours and get rolling today!

Health Benefits of Roller Skating

October 18, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

It’s National Roller Skating Month! Of course, we’re excited to celebrate at Skate World Deer Park, where we love roller skating more than anything else. Skating isn’t just fun, it’s also good for you! Check out some of the health benefits of roller skating:

  • Calorie Burning. Skatinroller skating weeknightsg at a moderate pace for half an hour can burn around 250 calories! That’s comparable to jogging, with much less stress on your joints. Your knees and hips will thank you for taking the easy way for them.
  • Cardio. Just like running, jogging, or swimming, roller skating is great cardio exercise. It strengthens your lungs, your heart, and your cardiovascular system, which means these organs don’t have to work as hard the rest of the time.
  • Muscles. Skating obviously strengthens the muscles in your legs. But think about it–you also use your arms for balance, and the very important muscles in your abdomen, sides, and back, also known as your core. The core is responsible for posture; having a strong core can even help to treat or prevent back pain.
  • The Brain! That’s right, skating isn’t just good for your body. Exercise has been shown to help reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Learning a new skill will keep your mind sharp, and studies suggest it can help stave off dementia.

With so many health benefits, what are you waiting for? Bring your families and friends and join us for open skate sessions or lessons to celebrate National Roller Skating Month at Skate World Deer Park!

STEM Field Trips at Skate World Deer Park

September 29, 2017 by Writers Leave a Comment

Are you looking for the greatest field trip ever? Look no further! Skate World Deer Park is now booking STEM Field Trips as part of our Rolling with Science STEM Program. STEM careers are still growing. What better way to get your students excited about math, science, engineering, and technology than by showing them how they related to fun activities like skating?

The Science of Skating engages students in a 45-minute lesson on science topics, covering Sir Isaac Newton and his Three Laws of Motion, force, balance, and even the movements of the Earth and the rest of the solar system. Then students have another hour and 45 minutes to put their lessons to work in the skating rink. Roller skating is an pendulumexcellent example of these principles! Every aspect of skating clearly demonstrates the Laws of Motion, all the way from starting to turning to jumping to stopping. Students who are exposed to these ideas in a fun, engaging way will never again utter the dreaded phrase, “but how will we use this?”

Groups can add lunch, snacks, and additional attractions to their field trip depending on their needs. Pricing is always customized based on the size of your group and any extras you might want, because education isn’t one size fits all, and we don’t believe field trips should be either!

It’s never too early to book field trips, but it can be too late. Give Skate World Deer Park a call today while spots are available so we can discuss your group. We can’t wait to see your students in our skating center!
