October 25, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

Do you have a big corporate or group outing coming up and can’t quite figure out how to make it something to remember? Throwing a group event isn’t all that hard in general, but to make it epic takes a little something extra. Luckily, that’s where Skate World in Deer Park, Texas comes in!

Let’s start with the basics.

At Skate World, we specialize in all kinds of group events and outings. From corporate work parties, and team celebrations to scouting outings and church groups, we do it all. We also specialize in large groups. Our skating center can handle some seriously big numbers and we offer discounts for groups over 100 skaters.

So why skating, you might ask?

Well, that’s easy! Skating is one of the oldest pastimes in the country and it’s been around for this long for a reason. lacing up a pair of skates brings you back to a simpler time where fun was analog and it happened with good friends and family, live and in person.

That’s still the way we do it in Deer Park. We let the DJ crank the best dance tunes and we open up our hardwood roller rink to you and your group for a night of good old-fashioned fun. It’s just that simple!

Having your group event with us at Skate World is memorable because you’ll all be here, you’ll all be in the moment together, and you’ll all have the time of your life. What more could you ask for?

October 10, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

Orange fall leave on a branch, isolated on a black backgroundOctober is National Roller Skating Month! National Roller Skating Month’s aim is to encourage kids (and adults) to be healthier and more physically active.

Roller skating is a wonderful way to get active. Skating works out over 640 individual muscles and is an amazing aerobic workout. Plus, people of all ages can skate at their own pace. A skating rink is an especially great place for kids to exercise since it’s a secure environment that encourages constant activity.

Don’t worry if you or your kids are a little rusty because we also offer great skating lessons at our Deer Park skate center! For children just starting out, we recommend our Beginner’s Skating Lessons. They’re designed to to teach kids 5-12 years old the fundamentals of skating such as standing on skates, how to fall safely, skating forwards and backwards, how to stop, and how to stay balanced while turning. Beginner’s Skating Lessons are held Tuesdays from 6 pm-7 pm.

We also offer Group Beginner’s Skating Lessons in one and a half hour sessions. These lessons teach basic skating skills and roller skate care. We also have Private Beginner’s Skating Lessons for only $30 for 45 minutes of one-on-one instruction. For an additional $10, you can add skaters to the private lessons, making it a great way for the whole family to learn to skate together!

So make your plans to celebrate National Skating Month with us at our Deer Park skate center! And for more information about our Deer Park roller skating lessons, email us at Morgan.Malone@skateworlds.com.

Tips to Get the Most Life Out of Your Skates

September 27, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

Close-up of opened skate ball bearingsLooking for ways to get the best performance out of your skates? Here are 4 tips to keep your skates in great shape and to help you get the most life out of them:

  1. Keep your skate boots dry! This is especially important for outdoor skates, but indoor skates can also become damp from sweat. Make sure to give your boots a good wipe down anytime they become wet. Also, never use an electric heater to dry your boots as this can damage and warp your boots.
  2. Adjust your toe-stops. It will probably take trying out a few configurations before you find the right toe-stop position for you. But once you find it, periodically make sure your stops are tightly secured to your boots.
  3. Check that your trucks are secured. This is especially important for people who prefer to slightly loosen their trucks, but everyone should periodically check them.
  4. Maintain your bearings and wheels. Make sure your wheels are clean and free from dirt build up. If they wear unevenly, you’ll need to regularly rotate them for better performance and to improve their lifespan. While checking your wheels for wear, make sure to also check your bearings. Always keep your bearings clean and dry. If your bearings are not enclosed, make sure to give them a couple drops of lube from time to time to keep them spinning smoothly.

Now that your skates are looking and performing great, stop by our Deer Park skate center! Check out our hours to plan your next visit. And if you’re looking to buy new skates, we can happily order you any pair from RC Sports and have them to you within 1 to 2 weeks.

Discover the Highlights of Roller Skating History

June 22, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatingEvery year, millions of people take part in roller skating … and for good reason! Roller skating has a plethora of benefits. Before heading to the rink, take a look at the interesting history of roller skating:

  • 1743: Roller skates made their debut on a London stage performance which wowed the theatre-goers. But, the crazy part is that no one knows who the inventor of this roller skate was!
  • 1760: John Merlin made sure people knew his name, as he is credited as the first roller skate inventor.
  • 1818: Germany wanted to WOW their theatre-goers as well; so, during a ballet performance, the performers came out on roller skates!
  • 1823: Robert Tyers patented a roller skate that boasted five wheels in a single row on the bottom of the boot. (Sounds a lot like rollerblades, doesn’t it?)
  • 1863: James Plimpton improved the roller skate by designing a “new and improved” quad skate. With his new design, roller skates were now much more maneuverable.
  • 1875: Roller skating was huge in England. So much so that the first competition was held in Plymouth!
  • 1876: To help skaters stop easily, the toe stop was invented and patented.
  • 1880’s: America finally got on board with roller skating and this fun activity was a huge success! This period is known as one of many roller skate “boom” periods.
  • 1902: As more and more people took up roller skating, public skating rinks were necessary. A rink in Chicago opened in 1902, and opening night saw over 7,000 people!
  • 1983: Roller skating was recognized by the White House when President Ronald Raegan declared October as National Roller Skating Month.
  • 1993: Thanks to Rollerblade, Inc. (created in the 1980’s), Active Brake Technology was created which increased safety for all skaters.

Now that you know the amazing history of roller skating, head to Skate World Deer Park to enjoy this awesome activity! Take a look at our schedule, grab your friends and family, and head to the rink.

3 Ways to Avoid Roller Skating Blisters

June 1, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatingWhat would you think if I told you that blisters were good for you? It’s true! A blister is the body’s way of protecting damaged skin. Often, fluid will build up in the blister, which is added protection to the hurt skin. But no one wants to damage their skin if they can avoid it. Consider the following ways to avoid roller skating blisters:

Choose the Right Skates

If you haven’t purchased your own skates, that’s okay! When you rent at Skate World Deer Park, you will likely ask for a pair of roller skates that are close to your shoe size. If your skates feel too tight or too big, exchange them! The right sized skates will not only help prevent blisters from occurring but will also help you skate better.

Avoid Pushing with Your Toes

Toe pushing is common among new skaters. It’s a bad habit to start and can cause painful side effects … blisters. When you skate, avoid pushing forward with your toes. Instead, push with your whole foot. If you skate by pushing with your toes, your heels will move up and down instead of remaining firmly planted. This will cause blisters and treatment may be necessary.

Wear Thick & High Socks

Your best friend at the rink is a pair of thick, tall socks. If you wear socks that are too low or too thin, blisters will likely form due to friction. Make sure you wear socks that rise above your ankle and are thicker than average socks.

Now that you know how to avoid roller skating blisters, head to Skate World Deer Park with your friends! You can play fun roller skating games or simply just race around the rink. We’re excited to see you!
