What do you do when the kids go into couch potato mode? Send them outside! Summer means there’s always something to do, from outdoor sports to pool time to trips to the park and playground. But summer also means kids have a higher risk for heat exhaustion. Protect your kids from the summer sun with these tips from Skate World Deer Park.
Heat Safety for Kids
Kids are more likely to dehydrate or get heat exhaustion than their parents. That’s because kids’ bodies have fewer sweat glands, so they can’t adapt as quickly to extreme temperatures. Heat stroke is a serious risk during summers in Texas. To protect your child from heat stroke, practice summer sun safety:
- Never leave your child in a parked car
- Don’t play outside during the hottest part of the day (11am to 4pm)
- Apply a sweat-resistant sunscreen 30 minutes before playing outside (and reapply often)
- Move to the shade when the kids start getting tired
- Save high-exertion activities for overcast days
- Keep everyone well hydrated with water and electrolyte-rich sports drinks
- Be on the lookout for symptoms of heat-illness in your kids
