Cap Off the School Year with a Class Party at Skate World Deer Park

May 3, 2019 by Writers Leave a Comment

Closeup of 2 girls working at schoolThe school year is almost over, and while the prospect of a summer away from school is always exciting, the time can also be bittersweet. Make those end of year goodbyes extra special with a skating party.

Why Plan an End of School Skating Party?

  • Skating Makes Memories – Who doesn’t have fond memories of good times with childhood friends at the skating rink? Skating is a classic American past time that you can pass along to the next generation.
  • It’s Good for All Ages – Kids (and adults) of all ages like skating, so a skating party makes for the perfect activity regardless of your child’s grade.
  • We Have the Experience – When you host your party with us, you can rest easy because we’re pros at hosting groups large and small. From schools and classes to sports teams, youth groups, and even scout troops, we’ve done it all!
  • Good Music Makes the Party – Music and good times go hand in hand. Music helps make lasting memories, so have the kids put together a list of song requests, including friend songs or a class song to play as everyone skates one final lap to together.
  • Skating Helps Build Healthy Relationships – Kids can feel a little isolated spending the summer away from their friends, but starting the summer off with a party or group visit to the skating rink can help them strengthen their friendships and build healthy relationships.

So make this summer memorable with an end of the year school party. For more information about our Deer Park parties, contact us at (281) 479-2816!

Why You Deserve a Night Out

April 26, 2019 by Writers Leave a Comment

Stressed woman holding large stack of paperworkYou deserve a night out. No matter whether you’re catching up with friends or flying solo, you more than deserve a night of fun. Don’t believe us? Then here are a few of the many reasons you should take a little “me time”:

  • Because Your Commute Stinks – Nobody likes wasting their time sitting in traffic, but you do it all the time. Your commute isn’t just a waste of time, but it’s also stressful! Anyone would need to blow off a little steam after putting up with your commute multiple days a week.
  • Because You Do It ALL – And we mean it all. Household chores, cooking, cleaning, dropping the kids off at school, making dentist appointments for the whole family, do we need to go on? Well too bad, because there’s more. There’s your career and helping everyone (family and friends) with all their problems too.
  • Because Time with Friends Is Good for You – Really, scientist agree that recreation time spent with friends is good for your mental and for your physical health.

Do you finally believe us now, or have we been preaching to the choir this whole time? Either way, you need to get out and have a little fun. Thankfully, our Tallahassee skating rink is the perfect place to sneak in some fitness while blowing off stress. Plus it’s a great place to hang out with friends and we always have lots of fun Tallahassee events scheduled. So check out our hours and make your plans for some “me time” today!

3 Things You Might Not Know About Skating Rinks

April 5, 2019 by Writers Leave a Comment

Skating symbol on groundWe all love roller skating, so here are a few interesting roller skating facts:

  1. Roller skating rinks are kind of like a gym (except way more fun) – Moderate roller skating burns roughly 330 calories an hour and is a comparable aerobic workout to jogging. Skating is good for your health, but you won’t be worrying about how many calories you’re burning while you are zipping around the rink to some great tunes while having a wonderful time!
  2. Skating rinks are much older than you might have thought – After James Plimpton improved the design of roller skates in 1863, skating rinks started popping up everywhere! This makes skating rinks nearly 150 years years old. Of course, there’s a reason they have been around so long – because they’re so much fun!
  3. They’ll make your party a hit! Where you are planning a birthday party or some other group event (like a corporate event or a small get-together as part of a social club), there is no way to beat a roller skating party! Since it’s impossible to be uptight while roller skating, it makes for a great ice breaker and is sure to put a smile on your guests’ faces. And with the right right music, everyone can get into it and enjoy the freedom of cruising along with your friends. Roller skating parties are a surefire hit for birthdays, team parties, and more.

So check out our skating rink hours and upcoming Deer Park events, and make plans to take advantage of our exciting Deer Park skating center!

How to Teach Children to Skate

March 22, 2019 by Writers Leave a Comment

3 children speed skatingTeaching kids to skate can be tricky, but with a little patience and these tips, even young children can learn to skate!

  • Start Small – Give your child short, easily digestible lessons and goals that they can master. Teaching a child how to safely fall, get up, and stand on skates is a good place to start.
  • Don’t Hold their Hand – While skating, we use our arms and hands to help keep balance. Holding a child’s hand doesn’t allow them to learn how to balance because their hand and arm are engaged. As much as you want to hold them up, it’s best to let them stand on their own (so long as they are in a safe place to do so).
  • Stand up Straight – The best way to learn to balance while standing still is with your hips, shoulders, and head all arranged in a straight line above your skates. Leaning forward or backward will make your child roll, so start with standing.

Of course, the best way to teach kids to skate is by taking them to our Deer Park skating lessons! Our Beginner’s Skating Lessons are designed specifically for 5-12 years old, and they are held on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The classes teach basic skating skills such as how to stand, fall, move forward, skate backwards, stop, and turn. We even have games to help keep the little one’s attention.

The lessons are $90 for five 45 min lessons (skate rentals are an additional $15). The lessons include two free passes to Skate World (for practice) and a certificate of completion on last day of class if your child has mastered all the steps.

If your child does better one-on-one, we also offer Private Beginner’s Skating Lessons. Private lessons are $30 for 45 minutes and an additional $10 for each additional skater (up to a maximum of 4).

For more information about our children’s skating lessons or to schedule a lesson for your child, email Morgan.Malone@skateworlds.com.

TBT: Your Best Skating Memories

February 7, 2019 by Writers Leave a Comment

Disco ball and lights at roller discoRegardless of the era you grew up in, roller-skating is a nostalgic pastime. Take a skate down memory road with us.

  • If you grew up skating in the 1950’s, you probably remember those roller skating outfits, but when it comes to music, no one makes us think of skating in the 1950s more than Ken Griffin.
  • Then, in the 1970s and 80s, everything got funky! Of course everyone remembers the clothes, but the music really stands out to us. Some of our favorite funky skate songs are on this 70s and 80s funk roller skating playlist including “Jungle Love” by The Time,  “Get Down On It” by Kool & The Gang, and of course “White Lines” by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five.
  • If you’re a 90s kid, you definitely spent some time at the local skating rink. You probably stayed up all night at a teen lock-in listening to some cool 90s skating songs like “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child, “”It’s My Life” by No Doubt, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé & JAY Z, or “Pump Up the Jam” by Technotronic!

Regardless of your age, come relive all your greatest skating memories with us at Skate World Deer Park! Don’t worry if it’s been a while since you’ve skated because our Deer Park skating lessons are sure to get you back on your skates in no time. Check out our hours and upcoming Deer Park events, contact us at (281) 479-2816 for more information about our skating lessons and Deer Park events, and make plans visit today!
